This week we’re chatting with Laura Mcgivern who shares her nostalgic story with us for another part in our One Year On series. Laura runs her hair and beauty business Aurora, carrying on the family business and is a true inspiration when it comes to demonstrating a really strong work ethic. Read through Laura’s story to see how she is progressing a year or so on from her original loan application.
What is the nature of your business and why did you choose a Start Up Loan over other types of finance?
My business is a hair and beauty salon called Aurora. It was originally my gran’s salon who unfortunately passed away 7 months ago. It was amazing for her to see me be successful and renovate what was originally her salon. I chose Transmit Start-Ups as a friend recommended it to me, the help I received during application was incredible.
What has your business achieved over the last year? What is your favourite success story to date?
I have 3 other staff within my salon who work on a self-employed basis. And I recently completed a course on integrated hair loss systems which allows me to bring confidence and self esteem back to woman with thinning, balding or hair loss issues.
What have you learnt from the first year in business? Is there anything you would do differently?
I have learnt that you need to be extremely hard working, put in exceptionally long hours and believe in yourself.
Would you recommend a Start Up Loan from Transmit Start-Ups to other businesses? How beneficial was the free business support?
The support was amazing, very in-depth and always just a phone call or email away to help out.
If you could give one tip to a new entrepreneur, what would it be?
Work, work, work. Believe in yourself and when you get tired work some more. Nothing gets handed to you, you have got to work for it!
