We love to start our mornings with a fresh pot of coffee here at Transmit Start-Ups HQ, so where better to visit for our latest ‘One Year On’ piece than Tepuy Coffee, based in Edinburgh, Scotland. With numerous customer reviews complimenting the quality of the authentic Colombian coffee beans, Tepuy Coffee is a must-visit if you’re ever in the Scottish capital. We chatted with Yina Suarez, who shares with us some of her start-up experiences...
What is the nature of your business and why did you choose a Start Up Loan over other types of finance?
I am Colombian and the third generation of family of coffee growers and from there I came up with the idea of opening a Colombian coffee shop. I bring the coffee from the farm of my family and we carry out the whole process from farm to cup.
After approaching many companies, I had a meeting with Allyson at Business Gateway in Scotland and they explained to me where I could find the financing part of my project. So I then registered with Transmit Start-Ups and got advice from Michelle who processed the financing of my project very efficiently.
What has your business achieved over the last year? What is your favourite success story to date?
As I import my own coffee in small quantities, I bring very fresh coffee to the customers which helps us maintain a regular customer base. Good quality coffee is a massive draw for my business.
My best story is that even when I have had obstacles, it is in those moments that I have come up with some of the best ideas for my business. So I have to bless those moments too for helping me find inspiration that I wouldn’t have otherwise.
What have you learnt from the first year in business? Is there anything you would do differently?
I have learned every day in my business that there are still many goals left to reach in my project. So I would like to focus on training, courses, expand the business further and improve the processes even more. That is a great motivation for me!
Would you recommend a Start Up Loan from Transmit Start-Ups to other businesses? How beneficial was the free business support?
I can say if you have a project you would like to get off the ground, Transmit Start-Ups is the best option. They can open many doors, helping with the first financing stages that sometimes can be quite difficult. Transmit really believed in me when sometimes others do not believe in your goals and aspirations. Also Transmit really helped with the financial side as they offer low interests and very good payment methods.
If you could give one tip to a new entrepreneur, what would it be?
That you believe in yourself, that you follow your dreams and projects. Believe that everything is possible. If I can start my project, so can you!
