Ian Straker

Meet Ian, Transmit's Operations Director

Former DJ and record label owner, Ian launched several successful music businesses in his early career, before moving into consultancy in the creative sector. He is now Operations Director at Transmit Startups, an organisation he co-founded and helped to become the UK’s leading provider of government-backed Start Up Loans.

Passionate about driving change, developing people, and business performance, Ian is a self-confessed data junkie. Having ditched decks for databases, Ian supports fellow startup founders with his considerable expertise in finance and operational planning.

Successful entrepreneur

Before becoming a successful serial entrepreneur, Ian studied a PhD in transport logistics. After using his expertise to advise Heathrow on the development of Terminal 5, he turned his back on academic and industry to indulge his passion for music.  He set up the Lost My Dog record label, took over a record shop and online store, and ran Kahua Music, a promotions and music publishing business.

Creative industries consultant

Following the success of his record label, Ian became a consultant in the creative industries, helping other music startups to raise awareness, build momentum and gain traction in this highly competitive sector.

Tech startup innovator

Frustrated by the limitations of file sharing software in the music industry, Ian was inspired to develop a new secure platform for music promoters to share media. After applying for funding from Business Link, Ian teamed up with (now) business partners, Damian Baetens and Rich Myers, to found a tech start-up business. United by their experience of the music industry - as well as a passion for working for themselves - the foundations for Transmit Startups were built.

Speaker and educator

Ian is a people-focused business coach who enjoys supporting people to achieve their full potential. He has delivered a number of workshops for aspiring entrepreneurs in the North East, such as ‘Show me the money’ and ‘Taking care of business’. He is also a regular panel member at training events in the region.

Startup supporter

Knowing the positive impact that startup funding has had in his endeavours, he is proud that his current business supports other entrepreneurs to establish and expand their own companies. Driven by a passion for developing both businesses and the people behind them, Ian loves applying his expertise to help startups, their staff and systems to thrive.
