Who Are We?

Transmit Start-Ups Ltd is based in Gateshead in the North East of England. It launched in 2013 as an off-shoot of Transmit Consulting, founded in 2006.

Transmit Start-Ups Ltd was set up with sole purpose of delivering the Government’s Start Up Loans programme. It provides finance, support and mentoring to new and existing entrepreneurs aged 18 and over and is one of only a few National Delivery Partners covering England, Scotland and Northern Ireland.

We work with hundreds of fantastic entrepreneurs every year and receive around 500 applications every month for this popular startup programme. The three directors have run their own companies over the last 25 years – some successes and some failures – and understand the challenges of starting and growing a business!

Business Support Team

Damian Baetens
Business Development Director

Damian has worked for over 10 years within the creative industries and business enterprise sector, including running his own music businesses. In his previous employment Damian oversaw a regional business support programme. 

Robert Webb
Business Advisor

Robert is a founding director of the North East’s leading actors agency and was a director, actor and producer at a touring theatre company. He is a manager of social enterprise start-up programmes and has mentored small businesses for over 20 years.

Tony Cawson
Business Advisor

Tony worked as a Business Link adviser then started his own businesses – a print company and a business that provided credit card payment solutions for the SME sector. Tony helps applicants develop their business plans to be ready to submit for loan funding.

Brenda Wilson
Business Advisor

Brenda specialises in Business Planning, Start Ups, Funding, Training and Mentoring, she has 11 years experience helping clients wanting to start a business by providing guidance, counselling in the preparation of business plans, financial forecasting and supporting applications for funding.


Michelle Doherty
Business Advisor

Michelle is based at our office in Glasgow and works directly with several of our Scottish applicants. She formerly worked for Jobs & Business Glasgow and has a wealth of experience helping businesses to start up and grow.

Julie Skevington
Associate Business Advisor

Julie has many years experience in banking, commercial finance and business support, having worked for HSBC for 15 years and as Growth Manager for Growth Accelerator. Julie advises businesses on the best types of finance, from traditional sources to alternative finance options.

Hina Joshi
Associate Business Advisor

Hina has provided Business Support for over 25 years, working across all sectors. Helping businesses & individuals with business start up mentoring, strategic business planning, marketing & sales strategy, financial & project management planning and developing business development plans for growth.

Carole Aitken
Associate Business Advisor

Carole joined Transmit in February 2016 after working as Enterprise Coach and Business Advisor for a local charity. She helps a diverse range of clients including people with mental and physical disabilities, offenders, long term unemployed to realise their dreams of setting up their own business.


Sharon Richardson
Associate Business Advisor

Sharon works alongside Carole to help clients with their Start up Loan applications. She previously worked at a bank and merchant acquirer, working with both start-ups and multinationals, before moving to a charity to provide loans to start-up businesses.

Ralph Savage
Associate Business Advisor

After many years in business Ralph knows what works and what doesn’t; how to put things right and make them work better. As a business advisor, he works with SMEs to identify key issues and deliver quick wins to get cash in the bank. Longer term, he builds trusted professional relationships, providing long term support and ensuring business success.


 

Operations Team

Ian Straker
Operations Director

Ian set up his first business in 2005 at the age of 25 and has subsequently expanded to running three different companies. He is a trained mentor and regularly works with brand new businesses in the creative sector and more widely.

Rachael Humphrey
Operations Manager

Rachael oversees the administrative, credit and client services tasks at Transmit. She ensures that everything is in place for our Start Up Loan applicants. She also runs her own photography and design business.

Wendy Halliday
Enterprise Co-ordinator

Wendy works on the various business support programmes and mentoring offered at Transmit. She has previously worked for the National Apprenticeship Service as well as managing customer service teams and she runs her own small business selling soap and scarves.

Rosa Barnett
Client Services Assistant

Rosa works on all of the administrative and customer services tasks. She is one of the friendly voices you’ll hear on the end of the phone and the person who will guide you through the initial stages of your loan application. Rosa also co-ordinates loan applications from our partners.


Joy Stafford
Client Services Assistant

Joy works directly with applicants during the early stages of an application, assisting with registrations and all aspects of customer service. She is another of the friendly voices who will answer the phone if you call our office or she’ll greet you if you visit in person.

James Webb
Administration Assistant

James is the youngest (and cheekiest!) member of Team Transmit. He is responsible for the initial processing of registration forms from applicants, along with other general administrative and office duties. He can often be found next to the shredder with a stack of paper and a disappointed look on his face.


Commercial Team

Richard Myers
Commercial Director

Richard set up his first business at the age of 19, without any formal business training, and has been self-employed ever since. He regularly runs business growth workshops and has mentored dozens of businesses over the last 5 years. 

Mark Gardner
Partnerships & Mentoring Manager

Mark has over 25 years experience of working for multi national companies in engineering and health care in a sales and management capacity, more recently as a start up himself offering business support, services and mentoring to micro businesses.

Chloe Dale
Projects Assistant

Chloe joined Transmit after a very successful work placement during the summer of 2016 and works part time while finishing her degree in English Literature at Newcastle University. Chloe assists with specific projects to help us research and develop new products.
